Created to work rats, the Plummer Terrier, named after its creator the late Dr. David Brian Plummer, has a mixture of Fell terrier, Jack Russell, Fox terrier, Beagle and Bull terrier blood. It has bred true to type for some considerable time now, considering that the breed is relatively new (1960's). Breeders can now predict what the outcome of any specific mating will produce, and aim to breed terriers to fit the requirements of the adopted working standard.

The Plummer Terrier Association (P.T.A) was formed in April 1994 by a handful of dedicated Plummer Terrier owners, after a suggestion by Brian Plummer. The P.T.A was started to preserve, promote and enhance the characteristics of this unique sporting animal in its purest form. One of the first jobs of the new committee was to form a database for all the Plummer Terriers in the U.K, we closed the doors for all dogs to be registered with us in June 1995, and this database is still used heavily today. It is keen to see the working ability of the terrier maintained to its highest possible standard, encouraging members and owners to harness and hone their dogs natural instincts, thus perpetuating the breeds fabulous hunting prowess, as well as keeping the correct conformation of the dogs.

Furthermore, the P.T.A strives to educate the general public on all matters relating to terrier work and has adopted the National Working Terrier Federation's code of practise. Members are also encouraged to join the Countryside Alliance to help protect all field sports. The Association also holds a few small shows every year to promote the breed and show just how handsome a working terrier can be.

We at the P.T.A. run a totally free re-homing service for PTA registered dogs, this is to try to protect dogs who through no fault of their own need to be re-homed, this service is available for all registered dogs not just for our members, once we have re-homed a dog we monitor it's progress and try to give help and advice to the new owner.

Problems that Brian Plummer first saw appeared again in the early years of the Association, but have since become a rarity. However, this does not mean that breeders are complacent as they are aware that new problems, as well as ones overlooked by Brian Plummer, will and have appeared. Each animal has its known faults valued and a scoring system is used when potential problems may occur. Sometimes cosmetic faults such as tri-coloured and pale nosed puppies appear, these animals are not eligible for registration, and at present are very rare indeed.

Since the conception of the P.T.A and the register, a slow but manageable expansion of the breed's gene pool has been the committee's aim. Now, as the Association has been in existence for ten years, we can say that the breed, after careful breeding by enthusiasts is safe, being able to sustain itself without any out cross needed whatsoever.

The Plummer Terrier Association is proud of its boast of being the oldest Plummer Terrier club, and of being THE governing body for the breed, and can safely say that the Plummer Terriers on it's register are of the purest form, having no other breed in it's blood.

The P.T.A's committee feel that the breed is consistently being improved and, as a new breed, is evolving at an acceptable and furthermore, manageable rate.

 

The PTA is the premier breed club for the Plummer Terrier, we hold a comprehensive data base which is unique to us and enables us to trace parentage of our dogs back to 1952, it enables us to produce computerised pedigrees for each animal registered with us which are unique to the PTA , all pedigrees produced by the PTA have two marks of authenticity, without these marks the animal is not registered with us, and without these marks the pedigree of the animal cannot be proven, we would always advise prospective clients to contact a representative of the PTA to ensure the kennels you intend to purchase your puppy from is PTA approved.
